Our Judo program is designed
for children and young adults ages 6 and up.
Please
visit our Little Dragons page to learn
about our preschool program.
The Judo program focuses
on three areas of growth:
Physical:
Red Dragon
Judo training provides:
* Healthy exercise to develop muscular
and cardiovascular fitness.
* Skills and confidence to avoid or escape dangerous
situations.
* Individually attainable goals to encourage your
child to stand tall and proud.
* Friendly competition for fun and challenge.
Mental:
Focus
Our training develops mental
focus and discipline that has been shown to improve student
success at home and in school.
Think
Firstis
a hallmark of our program. Children learn that they must
always think of the consequences of their actions.
Character
Counts! Education to re-enforce the "Samurai Values"
that are part of the martial arts.
Emotional:
Children develop
greater self-confidence, as they reach their goals.
We work closely with students
to make sure that everyone feels like an important part of the
group.
Children strengthen their confidence
through leadership training and opportunities.
Instructors:
All instructors receive ongoing
training on working with children that have special needs, including
ADD and ADHD.
Our primary children's
instrctor is a certified elementary
school teacher with an endorsement in special education.
What
parents have to say:
"I wanted to let you know how impressed
I was with the discipline and good manners of your class. I was amazed
at how my son's partner was so willing to let him learn different things.
It's hard to teach children at that age to think of others and not just
themselves."
"How respectful your students are!
I cannot wait for my son to learn this discipline and participate in
something so one on one. You really take the time with every individual
student and I love that."
"The experience that he had at your
facility exceeded my expectations and we're looking forward to many
years with you all."
Just a note to say thank
you for helping us turn our son around. He was in trouble and fighting
at school and could not seem to get along with anyone. We were at the
end of our rope and didn't know what else to do. Since our son has joined
the Red Dragon Ju-Jitsu family his attitude and behavior in school has
done a complete turn around. I say family because the parents as well
as the staff, are very friendly and are always willing to help and share
information.
I was getting calls and
e-mails from his teacher at least 2-3 times a week asking me to come
in for conferences about his attitude and his inability to get along
with others. A few weeks ago his teacher sent me an e-mail and wanted
to know what we had done to change his behavior. I told her that since
he joined Red Dragon we had noticed a huge difference at home. She said
that his attitude and performance in school had changed tremendously.
His grades are better and he is now sitting with the class and not by
himself at a desk across the room.
My husband and I are so
pleased with what Red Dragon Ju-Jitsu has taught our son. We would recommend
Red Dragon to parents who want their child to experience a lesson in
discipline while making new friends and having fun in the process.
With sincere thanks and
gratitude,
Earl and Sandy B.
Martial
Arts Develop Confidence
We
teach our students how to carry themselves to avoid
confrontation. It is amazing how a child will enter our program
very timid, and quiet, and after only a few weeks, they display
a noticeable confidence that carries into their daily life.
Fun
It is not always serious training.
Students are able to develop skills and have fun at the same
time.
Balance board pugel sticks
and Sumo Wrestling develop balance and awareness of the environment.
Students learn to tumble and
fall safely through dynamic exercises.
Competition:
Congratulations to Evan
- For taking Gold at the Virginia State Championships.
Evan and Chance went to the Shufu Open Judo Tournament
on March 14th. Evan took Gold in Division G and Bronze in Division H.
Chance took Silver in Division A.
The Red Dragon
Judo Team actively participates in local, state and regional
tournaments.
Judo competition provides students
with an opportunity to meet children from around the world.
Judo is one of only two martial arts that are
a part of the Olympic Games.
Several students have moved
on to national and international competition.
Every
student with the courage to step onto the mat is a winner. We
emphasize the good sportmanship and building individual confidence.
Judo-
Gentle Way
Judo is a "soft-form"
martial art. It was developed by Dr Jigaro Kano
in 1882. Dr Kano wanted to develop a safer martial art
that could be taught to school children, and used for athletic
competition. He selected the safest Ju-Jitsu techniques,
and modified them into the sport, which is known as Judo.
The colored belts
that are used by almost every modern martial art system were
developed for Judo.
Judo
for Self Defense
Judo
is an ideal martial art for children because it relies on
using momentum, and body mechanics rather than strength. The
same skills that children learn in Sport Judo may be used
to defend themselves when necessary.
If
an adult attacks a young person, he or she will most likely
grab the child. The best chance for escape is at that
very moment. We will teach your children how to react immediately
to escape.
Avoiding
dangerous situations is 90% of self-defense. We spend
a lot of time working with your child to develop awareness,
to spot danger, and to react to avoid it.
If
your child finds himself or herself in a situation
where they are in danger, the self-defense techniques they
will learn will allow them to escape and run away for help.
As
with any martial art, students must learn that it is dangerous
and must never be abused. We teach our student never to use
Judo outside the mat unless absolutley necessary.
If
you doubt the power of Judo for self-defense, watch as a 10
year old student throws around an adult student.
Because
Judo techniques do not require a great deal of strength to perform,
it is an ideal self defense form for children and smaller individuals.
Judo
An
Olympic Sport
Judo was introduced to
the Olympic Games in 1964. Although it is no longer the most widely
practiced martial art in the United States, Judo is very popular around
the world.
Our students have the
opportunity to participate in Local, Regional, National and International
competition.
What
to Expect
Your children will learn:
How to fall safely on the mat
How to escape from grabs
How to apply wrist and joint locks
How to use momentum to escape an attack
How to do throws
Body mechanics to better apply a technique or
throw an opponent
How to control an opponent on the ground
How to compete in a Judo Match
Tradition,
Confidence & Respect
Through the study of
a Traditional Martial Art, your children will learn confidence, respect
and honor. Red Dragon students strive to become modern day Samurai.
The training they receive will carry over into their every day
lives.
They will :
Become more attentive in school.
Show more respect for their teachers and others.
Develop a greater feeling of self-confidence.
As your child studies Judo,
he/she will be taught the great responsibility they carry by
knowing how to protect themselves and those around them.
As they mature in Judo, they
will learn that they will almost never need to fight. They will
display a confidence that will keep most bullies at bay.
However, they will be able to
defend themselves or others when forced to.
Growth
The training hall will
be a place to learn and develop. Students will train both their
bodies and minds. They will learn to be more alert, and aware
of their surroundings. They will learn to develop their "Ki"
or inner power. They will learn to meditate, relax, and focus
the mind. The skills they learn will help them in school, and
in their daily lives.
